CBSE Class VI ( 6th) Mathematics Chapter 1 : Knowing our Numbers -Roman Numerals System

The numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, 10 etc, which we have been using  so far, are the numbers from the Hindu-Arabic numeral system . This is not the only system available. One of the early systems of writing numerals is the system of Roman numerals e.g. I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X etc. This system is still used in many places.
For example, we can see the use of Roman numerals in clocks; it is also used for classes in the school time table etc.

Q1. A book exhibition was held for four days in a school. The number of tickets sold at the counter on the first, second, third and final day was respectively 1094, 1812, 2050 and 2751. Find the total number of tickets sold on all the four days.

Answer: 

Days	No. of Tickets sold	Thousands	Hundred	Tens
First day	=1094	=1000	+0	+94
Second Day	=1812	=1000	+800	+12
Third Day	=2050	=2000	+0	+50
Fourth Day	=2751	=2000	+700	+51
Total	=7707	=6000	+1500	+207

∴ The total number of tickets sold on all the four days = 7,707 tickets

Q2. Shekhar is a famous cricket player. He has so far scored 6980 runs in test matches. He wishes to complete 10,000 runs. How many more runs does he need?

Answer:
 The run scored by Shekhar = 6980
The score which he wish to make =  10,000 runs
∴ The run he needs to make required score =  10,000 - 6980 = 3020
